Authorities at the Juaben Senior High School in the Ashanti Region have presented an award the school won during a recently held Engineering Project Competition to the Ghana Education Service.
The school emerged winners at both the regional and national levels in the Engineering Project Competition for the 2017/18 academic year.
The competition which is organized by the Ghana Institution of Engineering was part of measures to generate interest in the study of Engineering amongst the youth in Ghana.
The team from the Juaben SHS during the 2017/18 competition designed and constructed a Reactor (device) using locally available materials to convert plastic waste to hydrocarbon fuel.
The team during the 2018/19 academic year worked on a modification of bitumen with plastic waste as a double technological approach to solve two national concerns including perennial flooding and road carnage.
Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) after receiving the presentation commended the award winners and encouraged all schools in the region to take keen interest in such competitions.
According to her, this will enable students to identify their hidden talents, build creativity, develop their analytical thinking and deep reasoning to solve problems bothering the Ghanaian society.
She said the students of Juaben SHS have proved that they have been imbued with the requisite knowledge, skills, moral values and traits that made them capable of addressing some modern challenges.
She advised students in Senior High Schools in the region to abstain from drug abuse.
“Recently, abuse of tramadol (tramor) raised a lot of public outcry. I must state that, drug addicts cannot be socially, physically and spiritually active. Moreover, abstain from pre-marital sexual amorous relationships and lesbianism”, she advised.
Headmistress of the Juaben SHS congratulated teachers and students who represented the school in the competition.
One of the contestants, Edna Adongo described the competition as a challenging one especially during the assembling of the machines.
She said further redesigning of the machine can be done to help solve societal challenges with the support of the Government.
A chemistry tutor at the school who was also the project coordinator said he was not surprised the school emerged winners in the contest since the idea they developed was geared towards solving problems confronting the nation.
