Pencils of Promise, an international NGO with office in Ho in the Volta Region and provides educational support to increase literacy in Ghana, Guatemala, Laos and Nicaragua has built 150 school blocks in Ghana.

The schools are built in collaboration with the townsfolk who are to contribute the labour.

According to the Ghanaian country director of Pencils of Promise, Freeman Gobah, the organization ” believes every student deserves a healthy and safe environment” and that is why the organization has partnered local assemblies and the Ghana Education Service in providing educational support services.

At an event to commission the 150th school block in Adzinukope in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region, Mr. Gobah praised the community volunteers for the zeal and enthusiasm exhibited in completing the project months ahead of schedule.

The Adzinukope community gathered amidst traditional music and dance at the commissioning of the 5-unit classroom block and 6-valve KVIP and were full of praise for Susan Rose, a donor in whose memory the facility was built.

The obviously happy community enstooled Susan Rose, Mama Avedzi the first.

The organization which started some 10 years ago with a request of a pencil by an Indian child has brought about conducive study area for 500 communities in four countries with 150 such schools located in 24 districts in Eastern, Volta and Oti Regions of Ghana.

What makes Pencils of Promise unique is the collaboration with foreign donors, local assemblies and ordinary townsfolk who normally volunteer labour for the construction works.
