The technology landscape in Africa is fast changing with technology giants such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft setting up specialized offices on the continent.
There is also a growing demand for software developers mostly by SMEs and other large corporations on the continent.
On March 23, 2019 NIIT Ghana brought together software engineers and techies at their Apps Challenge v2.0 event. The event was held at Impact Hub, Accra. The objective of the program was to throw light on the achievements of junior developers in the country. Applications were received from university students across the country, freelance junior developers as well as NIIT’s software engineering students.
The judging panel was made up of seasoned senior consultants and industry experts.
The event produced three winners who were ranked highest by the judges. Adolf Boateng was ranked the overall winner with his Apor App – an e-learning application targeting primary and senior high school students. The application is aimed at encouraging students to read more while reducing the weight some students carry in the form of physical textbooks to class. New book editions can also be made available to students at a faster rate.
The first runner-up was Dominic Kepomey with his Event Management App. It’s a platform to bring all event managers and clients to a common place.
The Gyeko group were the second runner-up with a delivery services app. They aim to provide employment to the Ghanaian youth by hiring them as delivery riders.
Gokals Ltd. a leading pharmaceutical company in Ghana sponsored the overall winner with a cash prize of two thousand cedis. The second and third winners also received cash rewards from NIIT Ghana. Herogh.com also partly sponsored the event with the branded “Step Up” T-shirts for all the event attendees.
According to the director of NIIT Ghana Mr. Yaw Amoateng, in a few years to come, Africa will reign in the global technology space with the young and vibrant youth the continent is endowed with. He challenged the junior developers to follow internationally accepted practices and hold themselves to higher standards as expected of any good developer in any part of the world.
