The Police in Chereponi have arrested a 28-year-old Togolese in connection with the renewed clashes between the Chokosis and the Konkombas.
According to the PRO for the Northern Regional Police, ASP Yusif Tanko, the suspect who was arrested last Sunday, arrived on motorbikes alongside six other people.
The PRO, however, said that currently, calm has been restored in the area.
“The suspect is Mattew Kolani he was arrested in Chereponi last Sunday, he was suspected by the people who arrested him to be part of the people who were inciting Chokosis in the Chereponi district. According to him, he was brought to Ghana together with six others on a motorbike. He confessed that he together with others burnt some villages, we are investigating to identify the person who brought them to Ghana to commit such criminal activities,” he said.
Eight arrests have so far been made after the violence.
Violence erupted in the area recently when a faction reportedly opened fire on wedding guests.
Three people died and many others were injured with several properties destroyed as a result of the clashes.
There were reprisal attacks the following week, leaving many people especially women and children displaced after their homes were razed.
The National Peace Council has called for a swift implementation of the recommendations by the fact-finding committee on the Anuful/Konkomba conflict.
The committee was set up to provide an in-depth analysis of the causes of the violence.
Programmes Manager for the Northern Regional Peace Council, Nuhu Abukari emphasized the need to implement the recommendations.
“There was a fact-finding committee organized by REGSEC and in partnership with the Regional Peace Council. The committee has submitted its report to the Minister of Interior and there are some recommendations in that particular fact-finding committee’s report so we want the recommendations of that report to be implemented.”
