Investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has sued the Multimedia Group Limited as well as three of its workers for defamation.
This follows what the investigator describes as unguided comments made by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong on February 26, 2019, on one of their channels, Adom TV during their morning political show, Badwam Mpensempensemu.
According to the suit, the utterances made against the Tiger Eye PI boss have destroyed his reputation both on the local and international front.
Anas is therefore among other things seeking damages including costs and lawyer fees.
“Egro, the plaintiff claims against the defendants, jointly and severally, for damages for libel contained in the publication endorsed on the writ of summons by way of an attachment and particularized costs, including lawyer fees.”
The three staff members of the media house (defendants) who are facing the suit are Benjamin Kwabena Asante ( Host Badwan Mpensempensemu and Presenter of Adom TV), Dominic Kissi Yeboah (Television programme producer at Adom TV and producer of Mpensempensemu) and Abdulai Awudu (General Manager of Multi TV) have been accused for allowing the defamatory words on the plaintiff to be published and broadcasted.
In the suit, lawyers of the journalist intimated that “the natural and ordinary meaning of the broadcast published by the defendants were meant to suggest that the plaintiff is a criminal who has engaged in illegal mining, bribery, corruption, extortion and impersonation of army officers. That the plaintiff has caused destruction to the land and the environment. That the plaintiff is an evil and odious person who is a nation wrecker.”
These comments were to be made during what the suit says was a “one-sided conversation” about a then yet-to-be premiered Anas’ investigative documentary on illegal mining – Galamsey Fraud.
“In consequence, the plaintiff’s reputation, especially as a lawyer and globally acclaimed investigative journalist, has egregiously damaged and he has suffered debilitating distress and embarrassment. Further, he has been inundated with numerous calls from business associates, journalists associations around the world, social relations and friends and outright strangers, and he has had to answer very mortifying questions”, parts of the writ added.
