The Ashanti Regional correspondent for Citi FM and Citi TV, Hafiz Tijani, is part of 21 other journalists who have been shortlisted to be honoured at the maiden Ashanti Media Awards by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
Hafiz Tijani, who has made a great impact since joining the station in 2017, entered his works in two categories namely Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene and Agriculture.
[contextly_sidebar id=”gOqfiWGwUArOiZxa1sFPfoZNKrtEq2bv”]The Ashanti Regional Chapter of the GJA at a press conference in Kumasi announced that the Awards Committee received 99 entries in 24 categories from 11 media houses.
The event, which is slated for May 31, 2019, is on the theme: “The Media’s Mandate in Fostering Environmental Sanitation”.
The awards are to honour and acknowledge the hard work of journalists in the Ashanti Region. Executives of the GJA in the region explained that the awards are opened for practicing journalists within the Ashanti region.
The categories include; News reporting and feature articles for print and electronic media (Separate awards), Investigative reporting ( Print and Electronic), Crime and Court reporting, Photo journalism, Human Rights, HIV and AIDS, Agriculture, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises(SMEs), Science and Technology, Anti-Corruption, Education, Tourism and Culture, Sports reporting, Rural Reporting, Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene, and Oil and Gas and Mining.
Speaking to journalists after announcing the shortlisted nominees, Chairman of the Awards Committee, Johnson Gyampo, said the submitted entries contained good journalistic works that met international standards.
He said the committee had taken its time to scrutinize each entry that was submitted before it finally arrived at the shortlisted names for the various categories.
He however expressed worry over the low female participation in the awards.
“The least mark was one, and the highest was five. We looked at seven areas that is the content, sequence, sources of information, language, packaging and others”, he added
Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the GJA, Kingsley E. Hope, called on corporate institutions and individuals to support the event.
Some of the shortlisted applicants expreseed excitement after the announcement, and said the awards will motivate them to do more.
