A Security Analyst, Adam Bonaa has challenged security agencies and other stakeholders to implement measures to halt the incidence of kidnapping in the country.
He says steps such as proper identification of foreign nationals along with a transparent property rental regime must be implemented to prevent foreign nationals from perpetrating crimes.
Mr. Bonaa called for a better implementation of the laws guiding residency and property rentals in the country.
The way forward now is that we need to start looking at how we will identify those entering this country. We are not able to properly identify such persons, know how long they are coming to stay or if they are already into crimes elsewhere. Sometimes they come and they feel the grounds is so fertile to go into crime in this country. Once we are able to do that, it helps us to know who these people are but unfortunately, the collaboration between the security agencies has not been too good. Has there been any education informing the landlords about those renting their premises without a residence permit? So these are some of the things we need to do to curb the surge in kidnappings.
Mr. Bona has also called for a comprehensive upgrade of the security apparatus of most hotels in the country to protect Ghana’s image as a safe tourist destination.
The fate of three families in the Western Region continues to hang in the balance after their relatives went missing last year.
Last week, Nabil Makram Basbous, a 61-year-old Lebanese Consular General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana was rescued after some Nigerians abducted him.
Increasing cases of kidnapping worrying – Police
The Ghana Police Service has described as worrying the recent cases of kidnapping and attacks on foreign nationals in the country.
Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Efia Tenge this current trend of crime is a cause for alarm.
“We have to come together and whatever position that comes from the security enforcement agencies we will make that known. For now, it is very worrying for us to be experiencing this trend of crime in this part of the country at this particular point in time. But whenever we come with any plan, and we have to get all of you informed what actions we have to take, we will make that known.”
