The remains of late Major-General Francis Vib-Sanziri, the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), arrived in the country from Israel, on Sunday.
The body was received at the VIP section of the Kotoka International Airport in Accra at about 11:00pm.
The body was received by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) with a short prayer ceremony led by the Clergy of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Officials present at the ceremony included the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lt-Gen Obed Boamah Akwa, Chief of Army Staff, Maj-Gen William Azure Ayamdo, Chief of the Naval Staff, R/Adm Seth Amoama, Chief of Air Staff, AVM Frank Hanson and Chief of Staff at GHQ – Maj-Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
Government officials including the Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey were also present.
Director-General of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau and the widow COP Beatrice Vib-Sanziri was also at the airport with some family members to welcome the body.
The body was subsequently sent to the 37 Military Hospital.
The burial and final funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon by the GAF after consultation with the deceased family.
Major General Vib-Sanziri was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres in October 2017 to head the Multi-National Force.
He was the former Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) from 2015 to 2017.
Major General Vib-Sanziri, aged 62 passed away suddenly on Friday, April 19, 2019 at Eilat, Israel.
