Hundreds of constituents within the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region participated in a cleanup exercise organized by Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The participants including regional executives and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region began the exercise at Apagyafie and climaxed it at the Manhyia Palace.
They desilted stagnant waters and choked gutters around the Manhyia roundabout and other areas close to the Manhyia Palace.
The activity was part of efforts by the host constituency to support the Asantehene and the Manhyia Palace during the celebrations and will be replicated throughout the anniversary.
Although Dr. Opoku Prempeh was out of the country when the exercise was held, his constituents came out in their numbers to participate in the exercise.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Ashanti Regional Organizer of the NPP, Francis Adomako called on MPs in other constituencies to bring their constituents together to improve the sanitation situation within their localities.
According to him, such initiatives will contribute towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6; which focuses good sanitation and quality water system by end of 2030.
Chief Executive for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Osei Assibey Antwi who joined the exercise commended the Manhyia South MP for the initiative saying that such exercises complement the Assembly’s commitment to make Kumasi the cleanest city in Ghana.
He urged residents in the metropolis to support the Assembly’s “Keep the City Clean and Green” initiative.
The 20th anniversary of the enstoolment of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on the Golden Stool at the palace in Kumasi officially started on March 9 and is expected to end on May 22, 2019.
The climax of the celebration April 21, with a grand durbar at the forecourt of Manhyia Palace.
Known in private life as Barima Kwaku Duah, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ascended the Golden Stool in April 26, 1999, as the 16th occupant, succeeding his brother Otumfuo Opoku Ware II who died on February 25, 1999.
The celebration also include the banning of funerals in the Asanteman traditional areas from April 8 to 29, which according to them, should be observed as such to avoid punishment.
