All schools in the East Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region were on Thursday closed for students and teachers to observe a week of the killing of a Religious and Moral Education teacher at Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School, George Somuah Bosompem.
Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and other teacher unions were at the Asiakwa Presbyterian Church in the Eastern Region to mourn with the family.
The ceremony was very solemn with those present, clad in red and black wailing and mourning the death of the teacher.
The Synod Secretary for the Koforidua Diocese of the Methodist church of Ghana, Very Rev Dr. Samuel Duah Dodd Very Rev. Samuel Duah Dodd who delivered a sermon condemned the act and urged Ghanaians especially parents to revisit the old tradition of discipline of children.
He said the shirking of responsibility of parents is the cause of several vices including the killing of the teacher.
“We are shirking our responsibilities as parents and the country as a whole. In the past, you will not hear of such incidents because of the training we were given,” he said.
A colleague teacher during a Citi News shared fond memories of the late Mr. Bosompem.
“Usually, I’ll come to school wearing a shoe without a socks and he’ll call me and urge me not to do that because I will not have the right to punish a student if they do not wear socks… He recently advise me to be helping my wife in doing the house chores after he encountered her at a workshop and she complained to him,” he said.
The family of the late teacher have since announced 26th July 2019 as the date for his burial.
In a related development, the Kibi District Court in the Eastern Region has remanded into prison custody, six teenagers who allegedly murdered the RME of the Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School.
The six teenagers will re-appear in court on June 25, 2019, as their application for bail was denied by the court this week.
They have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder.
The deceased, Somuah Bosompem, was killed last week for threatening to report the teenagers, all former students of the school, to the police for encroaching on the school’s land to smoke and also defecate.
