About 15 children allegedly trafficked in Edrakpota, one of the island communities in Afram Plains North in the Eastern Region are set to be reunited with their families soon, the Eastern Regional Police command has assured.
Last month, the Koforidua Circuit court remanded nine suspects arrested for child trafficking.
The suspects who posed as foster parents and aided in child trafficking activities in Afram Plains are to reappear in court on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.
Speaking to Citi News, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said the police are taking steps to return to their parents.
“One of the nine persons initially arrested was granted police inquiry bail. The eight others were arraigned before a Koforidua Circuit court and have been remanded to reappear on the 8th of May. They were charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit trafficking and trafficking.”
“The victims who have been rescued are now at a shelter home. They are receiving some counseling. Very soon they will be sent to the new Prampram area where majority of them were trafficked from to reunite with their families”, he added.
Arrest
The nine suspects were arrested at Edrekpota, an island community along the Volta Lake in Afram Plains in an operation which was carried out by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Eastern Regional Police Command, with assistance from the Navy.
16 out of 24 children between the ages of five and 13 who were trafficked to the community for hard labour works were rescued in the operation dubbed “Operation Ablorde”.
