Residents of Paebo in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri municipality of the Eastern Region are praying the Human Rights Court to order the payment of 13.78 million cedis as compensation after an explosion at a quarry-site which destroyed their homes almost four years ago.
The incident occurred as a result of the alleged negligence of AKY mining services which stored explosives in a warehouse without adhering to safety precautions.
The explosion killed one person and injured several others.
Speaking to Citi News, Secretary to the aggrieved residents, Ali Ibn Chambas, said the money will be used to repair damaged houses.
“We are just seeking an amount of 13.8 million Ghana cedis to repair our houses… Some people are renting as low as GHC500. When it rains some of us do not get a place to sleep. We have to come out of our rooms because of the leakage.”
Several explosions in the country have led to the loss of lives and left many injured.
The most recent one that occurred at a fishing community at Kormantse in the Central Region, killed about four persons.
Some residents were forced to abandon their homes for fear of being caught up in the blaze.
Another incident at Talensi left 15 persons dead.
