The Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for the Asawase constituency, Muntaka Mubarak, wants officials of the Electoral Commission to be invited to the House to update parliamentarians on the Commission’s upcoming activities including the limited registration exercise.

He also called for the Bank of Ghana Governor, Ernest Addison, and the head of Securities and Exchange Commission, Rev. Ogbamey Tetteh to also be present in the house to answer key questions with regards to various activities happening in their respective sectors.

Muntaka made the appeal after the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu presented the Business Statement for the First Sitting of the Second Meeting of Parliament on Tuesday.

Concerning the Electoral Commission, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding its planned limited voter registration exercise.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in disagreement with the planned exercise because of the decision of the commission to scale down the number of centres for the process.

“If we could have the committee on the whole where they will come and brief us about their pending activities. I think it will do us a lot of good. I will be grateful if the Majority Leader could make time for us to have this meeting,” he said.

But the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, who doubles as the Leader of Parliamentary business said the business committee will consider the request, being mindful of a court action over the limited voter registration exercise.

“I do know that these same matters relating to the conduct of the limited registration on matters that have been taken to court. Let’s do some brainstorming on that to see whether it may be possible in the circumstances to bring the Electoral Commissioner to respond to the issues that are pending in court,” he added.
