The Ghana Police Service joined the Ghana Armed Forces, United Nations (UN) and Government officials at a wreath laying and flag-raising ceremony to pay tribute to the uninformed and civilian personnel’s invaluable contributions to the work of the United Nations.
The ceremony which took place at the forecourt of the State House, Accra was under the theme “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”.
In a speech by the UN Acting Resident Coordinator, Owen Laws Kaluwa, he thanked all member states of the UN for contributing to peacekeeping operations and applauded all peacekeepers for the good work done.
Also, he specifically recognized contributions of Ghanaian Peacekeepers and paid tribute to ACP/Mr. Frank Sammy Kwofie of the Ghana Police Service and Corporal Mercy Adade of the Ghana Armed Forces –two Ghanaians who lost their lives while on the peacekeeping last year.
The Minister for Defence, Domonic Nitiwul on behalf of Government of Ghana commended Ghanaian peacekeepers for professionalism and courage during peacekeeping missions and for their selfless service.
He acknowledged the celebration as remarkable as it marks the 20th anniversary of the Security Council’s explicit mandate to peacekeeping missions to protect civilians, starting with the then mission in Sierra Leone.
Two contingents drawn from the Formed Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service and Air Force wing of the Ghana Armed Forces clad in their respective uniforms and UN blue berets and mufflers formed the parade for the ceremony.
