60-year-old Sowah Warlk, a cleaner at the Akuse Government Hospital in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality has been arrested by the Akuse District Police Command for practising illegal abortion.
The police after months of going undercover discovered he was the one involved in the illegal medical practices in the area.
Many medical instruments and drugs were found in his room after a search carried out by the police.
In an interview with superintendent Winfred Asera-Nyarko, Akuse District Police Commander, he stated that his men went undercover for months and found Mr. Sowah Warlk with several medical equipment and supplies discovered in his residence.
“We had intelligence that such a person is doing illegal abortion in his residence. So we placed surveillance on him and subsequently, on June 6 this year, I went there with my men and he was arrested.”
“We saw that the tool he uses belongs to the Hospital so we brought him to the station, put him in our custody but as mandated we cannot keep him more than 48 hours so he was put before Court and has been remanded.”
Authorities at the Akuse Government Hospital have disassociated themselves from the illegal actions of the cleaner as they assured to assist in the investigation.
Some of the victims are ready to testify in Court against the suspect.
In 2017 nine-hundred and eighty-six adolescent girls in the Greater Accra Region illegally terminated their pregnancies.
The figure comprised 31 girls aged between 10 and 14, and 955 adolescent girls aged between 15 and 19 years.
Madam Diana Bona, Greater Accra Regional Adolescent Health Coordinator, disclosed this on the sidelines of the Kwesi Plange Adolescent Health Community Club outreach programme at Tema Community One, Site Two.
Madam Bona indicated that the figure represented abortion cases reported to the various health centres due to complications and were subsequently referred to the Adolescent health corners.
