The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana Samuel Boakye-Appiah has said the Power Company is exporting power to Togo.
The assertion follows recent allegations from the Minority in Parliament that government is unable to purchase fuel to power its thermal plants in the Western Region leading to intermittent power outages.
Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Boakye-Appiah explained that ECG remains a profitable organization working with PDS to generate the needed revenue.
“I must announce that ECG is already selling power to Togo along the borders. Our brothers and sisters from the Volta region, part of Oti region. Because our lines are terminated at the borders of Togo we are already selling energy to Togo long ago,” he said.
ECG has also planned to position itself to become the regulator for the renewable energy sector in Ghana.
The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) is to utilise fibre optic backbone to venture into the provision of data and broadband services.
Samuel Boakye-Appiah, Managing Director of ECG, announced this as part of measures lined up to make ECG a key player in the power sector.
According to him, ECG is still a going concern and is operating as a responsible asset owner, bulk energy trader, monitoring of the concessionaire and offering consulting services, as well as the provision of training and skills development for the energy sector.
Among others, ECG has the obligation to monitor the asset that has been leased to PDS Ghana Limited so that by the end of the lease period, the current value of the asset, which is pegged at GH₵13 billion, would not have depreciated, but would rather have appreciated.
According to him, PDS Ghana Ltd, as the distributor, would handle and manage on behalf of ECG, all legacy (outstanding) issues, revenue collection and unpaid bills prior to the transfer date on March 1, 2019.
The Electricity Company of Ghana handed over operations of the company to Power Distribution Services (PDS) in February.
One major huddle that PDS is expected to overcome is how to clear all debts owed ECG by the government through its state agencies and departments, as well as Ministries.
