The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Western Region has proposed that people living in flood-prone areas are relocated.
Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Director of NADMO, James Obeng, in a Citi News interview, said that getting the people relocated as a long-term plan will save them from the regular devastation they suffer any time it rains.
Following heavy rains on last week that left many areas seriously affected, he said that there is the need for important action to be taken to avert the continuous loss of properties due to the floods.
He cited Bakado, a suburb of the metropolis as one of the areas worst affected any time it rains, suggesting that they are relocated as soon as possible since rushing floodwaters from many other communities flow downstream to wreak havoc in the community before entering the sea.
“We are recommending that they should relocate those people because I term it as the last transit point before all the water collected from the various communities, pass through Bakado before entering the sea. Every time it rains, they have problems. If we relocate then, the people can have their peace. The major cause is the tide of the sea… The long term measure is to relocate them,” James Obeng said.
The worst impact of the flood was seen in the area on Friday when a family of five including a year old baby died after a building they were in collapsed during the rain at Ngyerisia, near Sekondi.
James Obeng told Citi News that arrangements will be made to provide relief items to victims of the flood during the week but a long term solution would be adopted.
