Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to remain impartial and completely independent ahead of the upcoming 2020 elections.
He said this when the Chairperson of the EC, Madam Jean Mensah visited him together with her team.
The visit to the residence of the former president by the Electoral Commission was to seek his support and advice for the upcoming general elections in 2020.
“For the first time in our history, we felt as a Commission that it was important to bring the Commission to the doorstep of our key stakeholders. And you are one of the most important in our country’s development. We also come to demystify the operations of the Commission, and take off the cloth of secrecy on our operations.” Chairperson of the EC, Madam Jean Mensah told the former President.
John Agyekum Kufuor, who expressed his admiration for the integrity with which Mrs. Jean Mensah worked, said the only way she and the Commission could succeed was to continue on that noble path.
“Within the eleven months you have worked, I feel confident that the commission is been steered on an even key” Mr. Kufuor.
For Mr Kufuor, the EC plays a very critical role in the democracy of the country and must, therefore, uphold their integrity in the line of duty, while remaining impartial regardless of any pressure or attempts to interfere in their work.
“Wherever there is power, there is tension. Everybody wants to be there to manage the power, and so they will be pushing and shoving. It should be for the referee (EC) to show firmness, impartiality and also have the focus on why the national has decided to set the commission up,” John Agyekum Kufuor advised.
