The Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has announced plans of bringing to book, individuals who have misused funds belonging to the society.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, July 25, 2019, the Chairman of the organization, Rex Omar said some past board members misappropriated monies belonging to the society.

“An amount of GHC 2,113,803.93 made up of band transactions and several withdrawals in cash remained unaccounted for by Carlos Sakyi – KK Kaboobo administration for the period 2012-2014,” he said.

“As a board, we have authorized our lawyers to retrieve any misappropriated funds belonging to the society,” he noted.

According to him, delays in taking action against the said individuals was because they were waiting for an audit report of GHAMRO’s finances.

Rex Omar added that contrary to the perception that the current board has been lenient in dealing with the issue, they are resolute in their quest to bring sanity in the organisation.

“Let it also be on record that GHAMRO is not afraid to crack the whip on members who have brought the name of the society in disrepute,” he further stated.

GHAMRO is a Collective Management Organisation licensed by the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department in December 2012.

The leadership which included Copyrights advocate Carlos Sakyi and highlife musician KK Kaboobo were removed and Receiver Managers were put in place to organize the first-ever elections in 2015.

This brought Kojo Antwi into office. He also handed over to the current board in 2017.

Rex Omar, under his leadership, has collected over GHc 2million royalties for its members.

He has assured GHAMRO members that plans are far advanced to implement more technological and effective ways to collect royalties and levies for its members.
