The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) basic school, selected for inclusive education in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, is without sign language teachers and teaching materials for pupils with speech disorder and hearing impairment.
Consequently, all three pupils with hearing impairment and speech disorders in the school hardly partake in teaching and learning.
When GNA visited the School during an end of term examinations, it observed that the pupils, especially the one in primary five was only scribbling on the answer sheet.
Reporters were told that the pupil with speech disorder in primary one, could also not write but the one in Junior High Schoolhas a hearing aid and able to manage her condition.
Mr Stephen Addey, the headmaster of the School bemoaned the situation and called for support.
Mr Divine Klutse, a visually impaired teacher in the School said the lack of sign language interpreters and teachers with other special needs skills was affecting the academic progress.
Some of the teachers who spoke to the GNA on anonymity said there was nothing they could do to help the pupils because they had no knowledge in sign language.
They said they don’t know the sign language nor understand gestures by the pupils during lessons.
