Some students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region are fuming over what they call unfair treatment meted out to them by the National Identification Authority (NIA).
The students say several requests for the NIA to mount Ghana card registration centres on campus to serve the 4,000 students in the ongoing exercise have been unsuccessful.
The NIA began the Ghana Card mass registration in the Volta Region this week after completing Greater Accra.
Richard Harris, a student leader on campus, spoke to Citi News about the incident.
“When the registration started in Accra, we were in school. So, we anticipated that once the registration started in Ho, provision should be made for the students. Now that it has started in the region, there is no single registration centre on the UHAS campus. I called the Regional Coordinator to see if there is any provision for us but he said it was too late because the list has been gazetted so the students should wait for the district offices to open for registration.”
When asked if they were treated unfairly, he responded in the affirmative saying “…. our counterparts at Legon were given at least two centres for the registration and we don’t have [even] one.”
Ghana card mass registration plagued with network challenges
When the exercise began on Monday in the Volta Region, the NIA was unable to issue Ghana cards to applicants in a number of registration centres.
Some of the applicants had complained that they had to queue as early as 7:00 am but the Authority was unable to upload their data.
