The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has described as sickening, social media comments on the construction of a new chamber complex for Parliament
“The things I’m seeing on social media (about the project) are sickening,” the First Deputy Speaker lamented.
He was worried that the House had not yet discussed the proposed new building, yet some Members of Parliament were responding “left and right.”
He, therefore, directed the leadership of the House to make a statement on the proposed chamber complex.
His directive was in reaction to a contribution by Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, MP for Adaklu, on a statement on the Floor of the House, on Thursday.
As Mr Agbodza made a contribution, he drew attention to the Parliament of Canada, wondering why there were attempts to pull down the old Parliament House building of Ghana, as that of Canada had been used to attract three million tourists annually with accompanying revenue.
Ghana, he said, could emulate Canada, by preserving the parliamentary buildings.
A design for the new chamber was unveiled by the Speaker, Mike Ocquaye during a courtesy call on him on Friday.
The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu explained that the current chamber no longer meets the purposes of the House.
“Even now, we have more than 60 non-MP ministers and Deputy Ministers.”
“…even sometimes DCEs may be required to be in the chamber to be witnesses for one thing or the other, so we would have to provide adequate space.”
“But now, when all members are in the chamber and ministers appear, some have to stand which is not the best so it is the reason for the new edifice,” he had said.
