The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery has updated parliamentarians on the kidnapped Takoradi girls case.
He says security agencies are still investigating the matter which involves the kidnapping of three girls in Takoradi in the Western region.
He further explained that some kidnappings are not truly what they seem to be but rather human trafficking cases.
“There is a technical challenge but some of those that are called kidnappings aren’t kidnapping at all but some are called human trafficking,” he said.
The kidnapping of the three girls gained national prominence last year and sparked outrage among Ghanaians. Two people are currently facing the court for their alleged involvement in the matter.
Families of the girls have on several occasions threatened to embark on demonstrations with the current date being August 10, 2019.
The Interior Minister reassured Parliament that investigations are still ongoing.
“As far as 2019 is concerned, we’ve found 21 reports. We are investigating the matter and when we have completed the investigation, we will rightfully and technically classify it”.
Last week, President Nana Akufo-Addo gave assurances that the government and security agencies are doing everything possible to ensure that the missing Takoradi girls are reunited with their family.
According to him, the government is vigorously working to rescue the girls but has been discrete with its work.
The President made the statement on his tour of the Western Region last week.
All efforts are being made to bring back the girls. The fact that not much information has been out in the public domain does not imply that the state or security agencies are not working hard to ensure their safe return to their families,” the President said.
The whereabouts of the three missing Takoradi girls, Ruthlove Quayson, Priscilla Blessing Bentum and Priscilla Koranchie who were kidnapped between August and December 2018 is yet to be known several months after the issue gained national prominence.
