A number of students in Ghana’s Technical Universities have been forced to allegedly defer their courses due to the Students Loan Trust Fund’s delay in disbursing monies to them.
The students claim they use the monies to pay for their fees hence the delay in the disbursement is having a negative impact on them.
Some of the students who spoke to Citi News said, their fate currently hang in the balance as far as their tertiary education is concerned.
“The thing is that students have not been paid till now. Some of them have even deferred their courses because they didn’t have money to pay school fees. Some of them were also sacked from the classroom. students make their plans and the money doesn’t come. The people tell us that they are paying but the money doesn’t come.”
“They are still struggling to even pay that of the first semester. We have to register for the second semester and yet some of us have not had our monies. The problem is that the academic year is almost over because we are in July. This is a bit of a challenge because students are frustrated,” another student complained.
When Citi News contacted the Public Relations Officer of the Student Loan Trust Fund, George Laing, he was not certain as to the number of students that had received their monies.
Plea
A year ago, the Ghana National Union of Technical Students called on the government to intervene and ensure that the Student Loan Trust Fund releases their fees.
According to the student union, the delay in the payment of the loan grant this semester is having an adverse effect on their lives in school.
But the Fund asked the students to remain calm as it works to resolve delays in the disbursement of funds for the 2018/2019 academic year.
At the time, the scheme said they were working closely with the Ministry of Education and GETFUND to make the funds available.
