The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has once again cautioned against littering within the Accra metropolis.
Persons found littering could pay as much as GH¢ 2,000 or spend 30 days in prison in default.
According to the Assembly, residents within the Metropolis must endeavour to dispose of their refuse properly.
Public Relations Officer for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Gilbert Ankrah said the provision of waste bins at vantage points within the Metropolis by the Ministry for Sanitation gives the Assembly more impetus to take on persons who flout sanitation by-laws.
He said the provision of the bins negates any excuse for littering in the metropolis and any culprit found will be penalised.
“We have intensified the enforcement on littering within the Central Business District. The Ministry of Sanitation has installed public litter bins within the various Metropolis and for us we want to send a strong warning to all who come within the metropolis to be responsible. These bins are there so that if you have a litter you don’t just drop it anywhere but drop it in the bins so that we have an Accra where we can all be.”
The AMA has in recent times heightened its efforts to enforce the sanitation laws.
Its actions have resulted in the prosecution of dozens of persons, some of whom had to face prison because they defaulted in paying fines imposed on them by the courts.
In April 2019 for instance, the La District Sanitation and Motor Court sentenced one Kwame Akyere to two months imprisonment for littering the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra.
Kwame Akyere was sentenced on his own plea due to his inability to pay a GH₵360 fine when he appeared before the court presided over by Juliet Dudoo last week, together with some 35 other persons for the same offence.
