Some 13 constituency chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Region have petitioned the party’s national leadership over the suspension of Ekow Horace Ewusi, the party’s Central Regional First Vice-chairman.
Ekow Ewusi was suspended in July 2019 by the party’s Regional Chairman, Robert Kutin, after he refused to respond to a petition accusing him of engaging in alleged criminal acts.
But the petitioners insisted that the ”basis and roots of the suspensions are illegal to the constitution of our party.”
They say the regional chairman’s actions have also brought the party’s name into disrepute and that the matter upon which the suspension was effected has “no substance.”
“We are by this notice asking the National Executives to quickly and as a matter of urgency step into the matter to forestall peace and order in Central Region,” the constituency chairmen stated in the petition.”
The petitioners also condemned the purported “blatant allegation” by the Regional Chairman that there were some National Executives of the NPP shielding the First Vice-Chairman.
In addition, they raised concern with the lack of due process in the suspension.
The petitioners claim the decision to send the matter to the disciplinary committee was a unilateral decision by the regional chairman “without any recourse to the regional executive committee which is a serious breach of the party’s constitution.”
“We feel the suspensions should not be pronounced on platforms by an aggrieved person before due disciplinary action process is taken.”
The petition comes after a couple of protests against Robert Kuti by supporters of the NPP in the Central Region.
Protesters have said the Chairman is responsible for the cracks in the party in the region.
They have also called on Robert Kutin to resign saying the 2020 elections were at stake.
