The police have arrested one person in connection with the robbery of a taxi driver at gunpoint in Koforidua.
Speaking to Citi News the Deputy Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Francis Gormado, explained that the suspects had hired the taxi under construction workers.
“The modus they used was that they were by the road side three in number and they were holding a bag of sachet water as if they were at a site doing something and they were short of water. So they stopped him and they hired for a nearby village when they got there they pulled a gun over him and at that point the gun was taken away from him.”
The robbers approached a police barrier on Tinkong and Accra road but refused to stop when the police ordered them to stop.
The police who shot through the taxi in an attempt to destabilize the vehicle hit one of the robbers who died after he was rushed to the hospital.
“Fortunately around 8:30 am, the vehicle was heading towards Accra direction using the Tinkong and Accra road so the policemen who were on duty had received information so when the saw the car pull up they tried to close the barrier to stop the car so that they can search the car and its occupants. The car and its occupants defied the orders so they hit the barrier and sped off, the police officers were able to hijack a motorbike and pursue them with the help of the village folks, they were able to arrest one of the suspects and the other one has actually bolted.”
