The Alumni Association of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have expressed shock at the decision of the Ashanti Regional Security Council to declare the campus a security zone.
The declaration of the campus as a security zone follows what the Council says is intelligence it gathered that some alumni are instigating students to engage in activities that will disturb academic work and peace on the campus.
The Interim President for the Unity Old Continentals Alumni, Albert Amegavi, in an interview with Citi News said the council is being overly reactive.
Mr. Albert Amegavi was also of the view that the situation on campus does not warrant REGSEC’s declaration of the place as a security zone.
“The Alumi is surprised by the decision of the REGSEC, and as much they are in control of the region, we don’t know what prompted them to release such a statement. They said it is based on intelligence on the ground, but we hope that their intelligence is the right course.”
“We are waiting for the recommendations of the committee, admission is going on and they are admitting ladies into the halls…. As much as they are calling for this security zone thing, we are also shocked and waiting for Otumfuo to declare whatever is in the report and we don’t know where they picked their intelligence from. I don’t think there is any cause for alarm to declare KNUST a security zone.”
KNUST campus declared security zone
The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) yesterday declared the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) a security zone.
The decision, according to the council was as a result of intelligence gathered that some alumni are instigating their members and students to engage in activities that will disturb academic work and peace on the campus.
“The attention of the Ashanti Regional Security Council has been drawn to intended disturbances on the campus of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The KNUST campus has been declared a security zone until further notice. The Regional Security Council urges the general public to strictly observe this directive since any breaches may attract the maximum legal security penalty or sanctions associated with it”, REGSEC said in a statement.
The Council has also served notice that it shall ensure strict enforcement of the laws concerning public order, whenever they are breached.
