Police in the Eastern Region have begun investigations into the cause of the death of a 25-year-old man who was accidentally shot by a police officer at the Senchi Police Station in the Asuogyaman District.

The deceased, Nyable Mordzifa was in the company of a group of angry youth who stormed the Senchi Police Station to demand the release of two suspects who were in custody.

The suspects, Victor Hodzi and Patrick Amegbanu who were onboard an unregistered motor bike were arrested after they attempted to disarm police men at the Adomi Senchi snap check point following a misunderstanding which ensued between them and the police when they were signalled to stop for inspection.

The group who heard the news of the arrest of their friends stormed the police station in an attempt to free the suspects which resulted in a scuffle and subsequently an accidental discharge of rifle in the process killing Nyable Mordzifa.

Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Deputy Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Francis Gormado indicated that the command is investigating the issue.

“I can confirm that we have begun investigations into the cause of an accidental discharge at the Senchi Police Station in Asuogyaman. This was as a result of the arrest of 2 suspects who were on board an unregistered motorbike”.

“The suspects were signalled to stop at a police checkpoint for routine inspection and they became angry that the police stopped them. In the process, a misunderstanding ensued and they tried disarming the policemen at the duty point but they were overpowered and arrested. A group of young men subsequently stormed the police station upon hearing the arrest of their friends and a heated confrontation ensued again which led to the accidental discharge of the firearm which resulted in the death of the young man”.

“The body has since been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy”.

Sergeant Francis Gormado however called on residents to restrain from attacking the police and trust the police to investigate the incident.

“Whenever there is an accidental discharge, police will institute an enquiry to ascertain how it was discharged so I will plead with residents and family members to remain calm and not take the law into their hands because we will investigate and make sure the right thing is done,” he added.
