Police in the Northern Region on Sunday arrested 11 foreign nationals suspected to be commercial sex workers operating in the Tamale metropolis.
The 11, who are yet to be identified were arrested as part of an operation by the counter-terrorism unit targeted at clamping down on crime in the metropolis.
They are suspected of being victims of human trafficking.
The Northern Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong, told journalists that they would collaborate with the Immigration Service to deport the suspects if investigations prove that they do not have the legal documentation to stay and work in the country.
“The counter-terrorism unit embarked on an operation to clamp down on crime in the metropolis. We visited so many places and arrested some females who are engaged in prostitution and we believe that some of them are non-Ghanaians.”
“Preliminary investigations are ongoing and when it is established that they are not Ghanaians and do not have the permit to live in Ghana, we will collaborate with our immigration partners so they take it up from there. We interviewed a couple of them and they say they were trafficked here.”
The police also sounded a caution to those involved in human trafficking to desist from the practice because they will soon be arrested.
