NPP primaries: ‘Disqualified’ aspirant secures injunction to halt process

A New Patriotic Party Parliamentary aspirant for Amasaman constituency has secured an injunction to halt the party’s primaries scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 27, 2019.

The aspirant, Rockson Adu Boahene is challenging his exclusion from the polls despite reportedly being cleared to contest by the National Parliamentary Vetting Committee.

In the writ, Rockson Adu Boahene averred that although he had appealed the decision to exclude his name from the final notice of poll in accordance with the party’s election structures, there has not been any response from the national leadership of the party on the matter.

He is therefore among other reliefs seeking that the court, stops the party or its agents from holding the primaries until a determination is made on his suit.

He also wants the court to declare him a qualified candidate to contest the constituency parliamentary election in the Amasaman constituency and an order directing the party to include him as a candidate.

Meanwhile, Lawyer for Rockson Adu Boahene, Nii Kpakpo Somoa Addo in an interview on Eyewitness News explained that the two major issues the vetting committees had with the embattled aspirant during his vetting had been addressed hence was not disqualified to contest.

“He went through the process, indeed the report on him is clear that he is a qualified candidate who should be able to contest but for some strange reason, when the final list of candidate who were to contest was published, my client could not find his name…The report said he is a qualified candidate, that is what matters…You cannot tell my client that he is qualified but he is not a healthy candidate.”

Nii Kpakpo Somoa Addo said the decision of Mr. Adu-Boahen to take legal action over the matter is due to the overwhelming support he is enjoying from supporters in the constituency who are agitated over the decision to remove him from the elections.

Four aspirants, the Municipal Chief Executive, Clement Wilkinson, Nana Oye Coffie Ago, Isaac Kwaku Mintah Sackey and Kwasi Afrifa Mensah were however cleared to contest in the poll.
