The Head of the Election Team for the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Rhoda Osei-Afful has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to take a holistic look at the issue of reviewing the voting time for elections.
Speaking to Citi News, Madam Osei-Afful stated that, rather than dealing with various aspects of the election process, the Electoral Commission should take a complete look at the whole process to address the issues properly.
“There are various aspects of the election process that we must really give attention to. The bottom line is that we need to deal with the specifics. When we say we should quicken the process, which aspects of the process can be quickened and which cannot. And when the EC officials also talk about reducing time, how does it help address the issue? We need to look at this holistically rather than just picking issues,” she added.
“It is a good call for us to consider but we need to consider the various options, the merits and demerits. Bottom line is, if we do this, it is going to address the various challenges,” Madam Osei – Afful stated.
The EC Chair, Jean Mensa at the opening ceremony of an ECOWAS-UN Workshop said the commission is considering reviewing the voting duration downwards ahead of the 2020 elections.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the EC to reconsider its plans to review the duration allowed for voters to cast their ballot downward.
