The NDC in the Volta Region is asking the Electoral Commission to organise Regional Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting over the incrimination of some persons who are alleged to have registered multiple times with the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to the NDC, the EC has failed to synchronize the voter register properly after the May 5, 2016 supreme Court ruling which ordered the commission to purge the Voter register off persons who registered using NHIS cards.
The Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, James Gunu said such persons whose names were supposed to be removed from the register, are now being cited for multiple registrations after they re-registered using other identification methods apart from the NHIS Cards.
“After the ruling in the Abu Ramadan case, the EC was to purge the Voter register off persons who registered using NHIS cards so how come now that those same persons are being cited for double registration?” Mr Gunu quizzed in a Citi News interview.
Mr Gunu also expressed concerns over the failure of the EC to use the biometric verification devices in verifying people who have been issued with the Voter ID cards but whose names do not appear on the register.
“Some people’s names have ‘F.O’ written by them which indicates that ‘face only’ and unfortunately, the EC has not provided the Biometric Verification Devices at the centers to verify such persons whose details do not appear in the register”
Speaking to Citi News, the NDC’s Volta Regional Secretary said the EC needs to hold an emergency RIPAC meeting to furnish the political parties with the Voters register and also to find an amicable solution to the many teething issues.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Dogbey Selormey told CitiNews that the demands being made by the NDC do not fall within the purview of the regional electoral office.
Mr Salormey said, “RIPAC meetings are held sequel to National IPAC meetings so the regional offices do not organize RIPAC meetings on their own”.
He also clarified that werification machines are not used during exhibition exercises.
