Forty (40) Medical Laboratory Professionals have benefited from a Malaria Diagnostic Refresher Training (MDRT) in the Ashanti Region.
The refresher training was to build and improve the capacity of laboratory professionals in malaria microscopy procedure for quality malaria diagnosis and effective case management.
The training which is a collaboration between the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) was also to train the professionals in malaria parasite detection ability, malaria parasite species identification skill and malaria RDT procedure.
The Ashanti region which happened to be the seventh region where the training was done for the professionals has been held for professionals in the Volta, Northern, Western, Central, Greater Accra and the Upper East Regions.
At the end of the training which will be replicated in the rest of the regions, professionals are expected to be more proficient in malaria parasite count and be able to identify all parasite species and stages.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has offered its support by donating three microscopes through the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Diagnostic Focal person for the NMCP, Alexander Asamoah who presented the equipment to the Ashanti Regional directorate of the GHS reiterated stakeholders’ commitment in addressing malaria related issues in Ghana.
The health directorate has distributed the microscopes to the Afigya Kwabre South and the Sekyere South districts.
Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang commended the USAID and the NMCP for their continuous support for Ghana’s health sector.
According to him, the microscope will help improve malaria diagnosis for effective case management.
