The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta has threatened to terminate the contracts of road contractors who abuse and disrespect the President.

Addressing a gathering at Akwatia during the President’s tour of the Eastern Region, Mr. Amoako Atta, who was responding to some allegations made by a contractor on a Kumasi based radio station, said he will personally take the initiative to terminate, repackage and re-award contracts belonging to contractors found to have engaged in negative commentary.

“I don’t care if he insults just me but if he involves the President in issues involving my sector, I will not allow it. Any road contractor who will peddle falsehood and insult the President and it is proven; I will take steps to terminate that contract immediately”

Many contractors have been upset with the government over the delayed release of funds.

Scores of road contractors in July this besieged the Ministry of Roads and Highways to demand payment for work done.

Some of the contractors said they have not been paid since 2016.

The contractors, who said they had tried to meet the roads Minister, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, decided to stage the protest.

Gov’t assurances

The Ministry of Finance earlier reiterated the government’s commitment to clearing all debts owed road contractors.

A deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, while speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday said the government has paid GH¢1.2 billion to road contractors so far in 2019.

She also said 192 of contractors whose projects have been captured under the Annual Budget Funding Amount will also be paid soon.
