The Sunyani East Rotary Club has donated equipment worth $43,858.00 to the St. Mathias Hospital at Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.
The equipment donated include one ceiling mounted LED surgical operating light, one fully automated Biochemistry Analyser, two infant incubators, Binocular Microscope, Autoclave top load 50L and Radiant Heater for infants.
President of the Sunyani East Rotary Club, Rotarian Eric Adu Gyamfi speaking at the handing over of the equipment noted that more needs to be done if much is to be achieved in reducing infant and maternal mortality.
Rotarian President, Adu Gyamfi noted that Government alone cannot meet the huge gap that exists in terms of equipment at several medical facilities across the country.
“All these were made possible through Rotary Foundation Global Grant 1979089 and support of our international partners namely: Rotary Club of Nanaimo, Rotary Mid Island Group in Vancouver Islands and the Canadian Government,” Rotarian Adu Gyamfi noted.
He urged other NGOs and other well-meaning Ghanaians to support the fight against maternal and infant mortality.
“Under no circumstance should a mother die in labour. Pregnancy is not a disease. Newborns should not die just because there are no incubators.”
The Administrator at the St. Mathias Hospital, Rev. Sister Parissuddam Matangi commended Sunyani East Rotary Club for the equipment donated to the hospital and promised they would make good use of the equipment.
Rev. Sister Matangi also appealed for an ambulance, more beds, theater table and patient monitors.
The Bono Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kofi Issah on his part bemoaned the attitude of some health personnel towards patients at some health facilities in the region.
Dr. Issah condemned the attitude of some health personnel who do not disrespect patients who come to seek medical care.
He noted that these health personnel only show respect to patients when they know the status of the person and therefore called for attitudinal change.
