The Management of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has pledged to address the perennial problem of lack of residential facilities to accommodate students of the institution.
According to them, the situation of lack of accommodation has arisen because the capacity of the university hotel can accommodate just about ten percent of the total population.
The remaining ninety percent of the students, according to the management, are left at the mercy of private hostel operators around the vicinity.
Addressing matriculants of the institution, Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego F. Okoe Amartey stated that the school’s management will embarked on two hotel projects as a remedy to the accommodation challenge.
“It is for this reason management has decided to embark on two major students’ hotel projects to ease the students’ accommodation problem. Ten storey facility will be developed on the land adjoining the existing students’ hostel and another ten storey facility will be constructed on the newly acquired land adjacent Ideal College”.
“The construction of these projects will soon commence as the final stage of the contract execution with our partners, Access bank has been reached. The funding for these two projects will come from internally generated fund (IGF)”.
He added that the school will soon have new blocks too.
“Similarly we are at the stage of awarding the contract to build two ten-storey multipurpose blocks with funding from IGF as well.”
Professor Okoe Amartey also advised the matriculants to be responsible during their period of study in the institution.
“Most of you, fresh students are quite young and this is probably the first time you are going to live independently. There is, therefore, the need to manage your new freedom and life as a whole in a very responsible way. Your primary aim for coming here is to study for your degrees and diplomas and I implore you to channel your energies in that direction”.
A total of 8,589 applicants were offered admission.
This is made up of 80 professional students, 1,585 diploma students, 5,850 undergraduate students and 1,074 postgraduate students.
