Residents and drivers who use the Agona Swedru-Winneba road are demonstrating over the poor state of the road.
The demonstrators have blocked the access roads making it difficult for pedestrians to cross the stretch that connects Swedru and Winneba through to Bawjiase.
Clad in all red attire, they chanted war songs to decry the abandonment of the roads by the successive governments, thus calling on authorities to fix the road.
Some demonstrators say the bad nature of the road is causing destruction to their vehicles.
They say they will not vote if their roads are not fixed.
Citi News’ Central Regional Correspondent, Calvis Tetteh reported that the angry residents want the government to fix the abandoned roads without delay.
“As we speak now, there is huge traffic on that stretch. The police are here but they can’t control the crowd. The demonstrators say they are not going to allow any car to use that stretch unless their concerns are addressed.”
The protestors are expected to present a petition to the Regional Coordinating Council.
Commercial drivers who joined the protest are asking the government to put the roads in the area into a better shape within one month or face the consequences.
“This is not a feeder road, it is a high way. We don’t want any maintenance on the roads. They should reconstruct the road for us. We are pleading government to do something about this. We pay road tolls but these bad roads are spoiling our cars. The President must respond”, one driver said.
