It was indeed a memorable occasion as management, board members, former staff and old students of Benkum Senior High School joined current students and staff at the schools ceremonial grounds in Larteh- Akuapem to celebrate the schools 70th anniversary.
Chiefs and the people of the area together with the Municipal Chief Executive Officer for Akuapem North Dennis Aboagye, Deputy Eastern Regional Minister Samuel Nuertey Ayertey joined the celebration which was under the theme, “mobilizing stakeholders commitment for quality education, building our school for a common goal.”
Speaking on the theme, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister Samuel Nuertey Ayertey urged all stakeholders to contribute their quota in the education sector.
“Quality cannot be measured by looking at the outputs which are the examination results rather, the internal efficiency of the school system with controls for wastages in the form of school dropouts, repetition rates is a more appropriate measure of the quality of education. For quality education to materialize, all the stakeholders must come together to contribute their quota for the development of the school. Students should know that teachers serve as a guide to them and they must take their studies serious and avoid loitering and use their time productively during prep time. A disciplined student should spend more time in public libraries and not over-indulge in social programmes”.
Mr Samuel Nuertey Ayertey then called on management of schools in the country to ensure that only qualified teachers are given appointments to teach in schools.
“Schools management should inject quality in their administration by starting with the recruitment of quality teachers who will be committed to their work.
It is my view that leading and managing a secondary school successfully today requires managing it in a systematic and consistent manner. Success should result from implementing and maintaining a management system that is designed to continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the schools performance”.
He added that, ” It will enable management to harmonize policies and practices, reduce ambiguity, create stakeholder satisfaction and minimize variations in the schools quest to deliver high quality educational service. School Management should also be very firm with the supervision of teachers so as to ensure that they deliver full contact hours and deliver to the highest quality standards. It is my view that all teachers should be appraised at least once a year to ensure quality delivery”.
