The Director-General of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has asked the personnel of the department to desist from extorting monies from drivers.
The MTTD Boss says the extortion of monies, illegal seizure of documents and the unnecessary delays of drivers is negatively affecting the image of the service.
COP Tetteh Yohuno who was speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-week training program for police outriders, said officers found culpable will be sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to others.
“Some police officers including riders turn drivers into their gold mines. They are fond of harassing drivers, extorting monies, delaying motorists unduly and allegedly making discouraging and unprofessional political comments and also illegal extortions unbecoming of police professionals.”
“They also cease documents and papers from drivers who refuse to pay monies to them. Most often than not, they threaten drivers who try not to pay with the withdrawal of support should they be attacked by robbers or any such difficulty on the road. The police administration takes exception to these negative behaviors targeted to denigrate the image of the service. Any police officer who engages in these unprofessional conducts will receive severe sanctions”.
Personnel of the Ghana Police Service have recently been marred with allegations of taking bribes from drivers and letting them go when they fall short of the law.
There have also been allegations that some of the personnel request for money from motorists even when they have not done anything wrong.
