The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is urging the government to stabilise the price fuel ahead of the Christmas holidays.
The union says that further fuel hikes will burden vehicle owners and travellers during the Christmas holidays.
The Chief Executive Officer of GASSOP Oil, Francis Kojo Poku, for example, described the latest increase in fuel prices as insensitive and unfortunate barely a week to Christmas.
This call follows a directive by the government to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to immediately withdraw further increases in fuel prices.
This directive comes on the back of an ultimatum given to the Authority, by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers-Ghana (COPEC), to halt any attempt to increase fuel prices.
Chairman of GPRTU, Kwame Kuma, speaking to Citi News, said an increase in price would affect drivers during the festive period.
He also called for more clarity from the government if there were plans to increase fuel prices.
“If the Christmas is coming a lot of people will travel so we are pleading with government to try and let the fuel ]prices] remain [where they are]. If there is something, he should inform us for us to also tell the drivers but that one doesn’t come on so we are pleading with the government that if something is coming, they should try and inform us for us to also know what is going on”.
Barely a week after fuel prices went up at the pumps across the country, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers has hinted of another upward adjustment in fuel prices.
According to the chamber, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has written to Petroleum Service Providers notifying them of an adjustment “some elements on the already high petroleum price build-up and fuel prices”.
