Two people have been confirmed dead following a shooting incident at Mankessim in the Central Region.
Five other persons who have also been left injured, are currently receiving medical attention.
The Public Relations Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, DSP Irene Oppong, confirmed the development to the media.
“The Central Regional Police command wants to confirm to the media that there has been a shooting incident at Mankessim when the queen mother was being enstooled. Currently seven people have been shot and two have passed on and five are on admissions. Any development will be communicated,” she said.
The incident occurred when a faction of a protracted chieftaincy dispute at Mankessim enstooled a new queen mother in the person of Nana Araba Otuah II to replace Nana Ama Amisssah who is the substantive queenmother of Mankessim after a High Court in Cape Coast on November 11, 2019 ruled to nullify the latter’s name and that of the Omanhene of Mankessim Traditional council from the register of National House of Chiefs.
While the newly enstooled queenmother was being transported in a palanquine and paraded in a procession along the Mankessim Anafo road some gunmen in a storey building near the Anafo junction opened fire at those taking part in the procession.
Meanwhile, a police officer, Inspector William Nyarko is among those injured.
He has been referred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and is responding to treatment.
Five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
