President Nana Akufo-Addo nominated three Justices of the Court of Appeal to replace three Supreme Court Justices who are due to retire, including the current Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, subject to parliamentary approval.

The two nominees who were vetted, Justice Mariama Owusu and Justice Avril Lovelace Johnson, expressed strong opinions on a variety of legal issues including the death penalty, legal education reforms, and perceived judicial corruption among others.
