A private legal practitioner representing some customers of Menzgold Ghana Limited, Amanda Clinton, has reiterated the need for government’s intervention in solving the problems facing the customers.
The lawyer believes the arrest of some customers who besieged the house of Nana Appiah Mensah is an indication that the customers will stop at nothing to retrieve their locked up funds.
In an interview with Citi News, she stressed the need for the government to collaborate with the company to retrieve the locked-up funds of customers.
“I do not condone the threats of violence. However this highlights for everyone that the Menzgold issue is not going away anytime soon and government cannot completely wash their hands from this…If government says our job is not to take money from taxpayers money to pay these people, of course it is a legitimate argument, but what are you going to do to ensure that Menzgold and his team pay…What can the government do to get back money to Ghanaians because this is a public interest case.”
Background
Following an order from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to suspend aspects of its operations 2018, Menzgold has since been struggling to pay its customers their monies.
Management of the gold dealership firm, Menzgold on December 27 2019, said close to 200 customers of the company had received their locked-up funds, a claim the customers disputed.
On Wednesday, about 90 of customers of Menzgold were arrested by the Police for massing up at the Trassaco residence of Nana Appiah Mensah.
They were subsequently granted bail.
This followed an initial challenge by the arrested persons to meet their bail conditions.
The customers were at the residence of NAM1 to demand their locked-up investments.
Police officials from the Accra Regional Command claimed they arrested the customers to maintain order at the place.
