The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says Ghanaians will begin to enjoy the reduction in their electricity tariffs by the end of April.
The Energy Relief Package as announced by the president is part of the interventions introduced by the government to alleviate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on people and businesses.
Speaking to Citi News, the Managing Director of ECG, Kwame Agyeman-Budu stated that consumers will begin to feel the impact of government’s intervention at the end of April.
“By the first week of May, they will see their 50 percent based on the benchmark of March. Those in the non-lifeline category when they go the vendor show their card, it will show the consumption in March and the 50 percent will be credited to their account in the first week of May. It is not like we are delaying it but the system [is configured in a certain way].”
The Energy Minister John Peter Amewu at a media briefing on Thursday indicated that the 50 percent discount will translate into GHS 235.4 million per month.
The government will be spending a total of 1 billion on Coronavirus electricity reliefs for the allocated three months thus April, May and June.
