The Association of Kandiga Youth in the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region say they are not settlers on the land of Doba in the Kassena Nankana Municipality as claimed by the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Mr. William Aduum.
On Saturday, 25th April 2020, Mr William Aduum granted an interview to Citi News on a land dispute at Akonkongo-Abempengo electoral area between the people of Kandiga and Doba.
He stated that indigenes of Kandiga who are settlers in Doba and the people of Doba clashed over a parcel of land earmarked for the construction of a police post both claiming ownership of the land.
The situation led to the death of one and the arrest of 31 persons in connection with the incident while hundreds of women and children have fled the area to seek asylum in other communities.
But in a press statement issued by the leader of the Kandiga Youth Association, Micheal Abogro, they are not settlers on the land of Doba.
He further described the statement as misleading adding that it has the tendency of instigating further conflicts. He thus urged Mr William Aduum to retract and render an unqualified apology to the people of Kandiga.
“We want to categorically make it clear to the general public that the people of Kandiga are not settlers on any Doba land. In fact, history has it that the people from Navrongo, Doba and Kandiga and their surrounding neighbouring communities all originated from present-day Burkina Faso to settle in their various present location”.
Mr. Abogro appealed to politicians from all sides to stay neutral in relation to the dispute.
