Patrons of Citi FM/TV’s 2020 Heritage Caravan have donated mattresses and nose masks worth GHS10,000 to some residents of Old Fadama who have been rendered homeless due to recent fire outbreaks and a demolition exercise.
Countless residents of Old Fadama have been homeless after fire swept through the slum destroying hundreds of structures on Tuesday, April 7, 2020.
The fire which started around 2 am on that day, according to eyewitnesses, destroyed many properties.
Weeks after this disaster, there was a demolition exercise carried out in the area which left more vulnerable persons homeless.
The demolition was to pave way for the dredging of the Korle Lagoon ahead of the rainy season.
It was alleged that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources authorized the exercise, an accusation they denied.
All these happened during the time Accra was put under a partial lockdown to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Speaking to Citi News, one of the beneficiaries of the donation, expressed gratitude to Citi FM/TV.
“We haven’t had any place to sleep since they demolished our room. We were lying on the ground and sleeping outside. I thank Citi FM for what they have given us. I thank them so much. May God bless them,” she said.
On their part, the patrons said, “We have become so attached to Citi FM/TV that we follow the news everywhere it goes. We were touched by the plight of the Old Fadama women community. Based on that, as a group, we came together to make a small donation to them. I am sure that this donation is going to put a smile on all the children and women here.”
