The Weija Circuit Court has sentenced 55-year-old Osman Mumuni, also known as Commander, to two years imprisonment.
The accused was charged with two counts of use of offensive weapon and causing harm contrary to sections 70 and 69 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960, (Act 29).
At the hearing of the case on May 19, 2020, Mumuni Osman pleaded guilty to both counts.
The presiding judge, His Honour Bernard Bentil convicted the accused person on his own plea and sentenced him to two years imprisonment on each count.
The sentence is to run concurrently.
The judge prior to passing the sentence stated that, the accused is a first-time offender and that, he has shown remorse which he felt through his demeanour.
He further stated that, he wanted the punishment to serve as a deterrent to others.
Efforts are being made to transport the suspect to the Ankaful Prison in the Central Region to serve his term.
Man arrested
Osmanu Mumuni was arrested by the Weija Division of the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit (DOVVSU) over the weekend for cutting off part of his son’s ear with a razor blade and attempting to put his hand in a fire.
The incident occurred at Obuom-Domeabra where the convict lives with the boy.
According to police, they received information from the mother of the child that the suspect, who is her ex-husband had chopped off part of the boy’s ear and placed the boy’s fingers in an open fire for allegedly stealing ¢250.
Police say they met the victim in severe pains with marks of assault all over his body, took him to the Amanfrom Polyclinic and have since been released to his mother for home care.
