The Geography Students’ Association of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has donated items to three basic schools within the Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti region.
The items which include dual desks and desktop computers forms part of the group’s corporate social responsibilities.
The group believes that development within Ghana’s rural communities should be a collective effort by all individuals and organisations who are in a capacity to support the government in such regard.
The President for the group, Joseph Adu Bobie, made the presentation together with their lecturer and the head of the Geography and Rural development department.
He urged other student bodies to take part in such a gesture.
“I will encourage all other student bodies to try to identify the problems of this nature in our communities and go to their aid and help them.”
Dr David Fokuo a lecturer at the Department of Geography and Rural Development at KNUST recounted how the previous donations to schools in the Juaben Municipality enhanced the academic performance of some beneficiaries.
“As a result of the textbook that we donated, the JHS pass rate increased from 27% to over 50%. That is the extent of our impact, and we know that from what we did last year since they are yet to write the exam, the textbooks we provided will push the pass rate further higher, and that is the impact we have made so far in the educational sector of the Municipality.
Also, the Municipal Director of Education for Juaben in the Ashanti region, Charles Adu Kumi who received the donation on behalf of the three schools said he believes the desk will go a long way to help the schools practice social distancing in their various classrooms once schools resume.
“Now that we’re in this era of COVID-19, one of the safety protocols that we’re observing is social distancing, what it means is that in the classroom, we need to space out these students. So for us to receive this furniture, it is going to help us in observing these safety protocols”.
He further called on other groups to help donate to various schools to enable them to practice proper social distancing in case schools reopen fully in this COVID-19 era.
