The Bible Society of Ghana, a non-denominational Christian organization has donated some Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and some food items worth GHS30,000 to the Kumasi Central Prisons as part of efforts to help in the fight against the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
The items include bags of rice, beans, gari, gallons of cooking oil, nose masks, Bibles, veronica buckets, boxes of sanitizers, liquid soap and gloves.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Oversight Committee of Bible Society of Ghana, Reverend Dr. Boakye Yiadom implored prisons authorities to adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols to prevent any outbreak in the country’s prisons.
He also commended the Ghana prisons service for the protocols to safeguard inmates and has therefore urged the public to support the prisons to contain the spread of COVID-19.
“We are here to present some items to the prisoners and the officers. As a whole I would like to encourage all Ghanaians to be law abiding because all that the President has put in place is to save our lives and to help us beat the Covid 19 pandemic. I would like to appeal to Ghanaians to be disciplined to ensure that we move forward as a nation. We also urge all Ghanaians to also come and help in whatever way they can. When we came, we saw that the prisoners a lot of needs. They need sanitizers, hand washing soaps amongst others,” he said.
The Public Relations Officer in charge of Kumasi Central Prisons, DSP Richard Bukari expressed gratitude to the donors for the gesture.
“We are very grateful to the Bible Society of Ghana for this kind gesture. We will use this opportunity to appeal to other philanthropic organizations to emulate the example of the Bible society of Ghana and come to our aid as we constantly need the items. The numbers definitely will be reducing so we always appeal that philanthropists come and restore them,” he said.
The Bible Society of Ghana is a non-denominational Christian Organization which seeks to support pastoral work in prisons and correctional centers by distributing bibles to inmates.
